The Ken's Archive

The legend began in 1968, when Ken Stone opened Ken's Minimarket in Wirksworth, a popular grocery store located just up the road from our current premises.  After finishing school, both of Ken's sons Philip and Robert joined the family business and built the Ken's we know today.

40 years ago, Rob & Phil purchased Bagnalls store where the shop stands today, and began selling fresh fruit and veg for the first time.  From there, the shop became a hub of the community. As well as fresh groceries, posh wine and an abundance of bargains, customers regularly visit the shop for a chat with the friendly staff.

Ken's is one of the longest-standing independent grocery stores in the UK and is now being run by the 3rd Generation.  Since Phillip's retirement in 2024 the shop has been run by Robert, with help from his Sister Jane, his youngest daughter Amy, and 15 members of staff who make up the Ken's family.
